The Argument from religious experience is an argument for the existence of God, as against materialism.

Outline logical structure

Its logical structure is essentially as follows:

  1. There are compelling reasons for considering at least some religious experiences to point to and validate spiritual realities that exist in a way that transcends any material manifestations.
  2. According to Materialism, nothing exists in a way that transcends its material manifestations.
  3. According to Classical Theism in general, and to many theistic faiths, God endows Humans with the ability to have spiritual experiences and to perceive, albeit imperfectly, such spiritual realities and these spiritual realities exist in a way that transcends any material manifestations.
  4. Therefore, to the extent that premise (1) is accepted, Theism is more plausible than Materialism.

Points 2, 3 and 4 are relatively un-controversial, and the argument is formally valid, so discussion focuses on the premise (1).

Scientific evidence about ghosts and other paranormal topics?
Q. A friend and I had a sh**storm of an argument about the existence and evidence of ghosts (specifically) and the paranormal in general. I have been able to find evidence that psychological, environmental, and physiological aspects play a role in the perception of paranormal phenomenon. What I haven't been able to find is any scientific article (peer-reviewed or not) suggesting empirical evidence for ghosts or other paranormal activities; I'm referring to evidence that shows they are a separate phenomenon from the psychological, environmental, physiological aspects. The only articles I've come across are those that look at the belief in religious/paranormal experiences across cultures, age, sex, race, etc. Has anyone come across scientific… [cont.]

Which is the intellectually superior view? Better yet, which view reflects the universe as it is?
Q. Reply to the atheist who adheres to one of the following two positions: 1. There is no evidence that God exists. 2. There is not enough evidence that God exists to justify a belief in God. Reply to 1: there is at least some evidence that God exists just as there is some evidence that God does not exist. This position is fatally weak. Reply to 2: There are at least four evidences that indisputably increase the probability that God exists. Do not confuse increasing the probability that God exists with increasing the probability that God exists to greater than 0.5: 1. The universe exists. 2. The universe exhibits order here and everywhere we can observe. 3. Scriptural accounts of peoples who claim contact with God maintain some… [cont.]

A. There is no empirical evidence that God exists. The existence of the universe is only evidence that the universe exists. The order of the universe comes from the properties of pure numbers. Scriptural accounts have no significance at all. Religious experiences have no significance at all. If a perfect entity existed it would be complete within itself and have no need to create a universe or us.

Do the spirits invade our privacy?
Q. Read carefully: Persons who don't believe in spirits ignore this question, unless you have something constructive to say. Most people believe in spirits and view them in a favourable light. They believe in guardian angels and spirit guides, for example. I believe that if there are spirits, they are intelligent, alien biological organisms who may act as brain parasites, taking from our mental experiences to intellectually and emotionally grow. But they do not share our personal identity, so they do not immortalize us. Therefore, I do not accept religious definitions of spirit. I believe that if there are spirits, we should not trust them especially if they SPY on us (watch us without clearly showing to us that they are watching us). … [cont.]

A. I think that they could. When my aunt died recently, whom I respected a great deal, I felt that she'd be "watching over" me. Of course, when I bathed, utilized the rest room, or had relations with my husband, I still suspected that she was watching me, and that made me uncomfortable. It just didn't make sense to me that she could watch over me continuously and not see things I would be adverse to her viewing.
