A. The schools of Bamathi and Vivarana arose only to address particular charges against advaita by Bhaskara and later by Ramanuja.( and others) ... after the period of Adhi Sankara. Brief variation in the two schools pertains to description of the locus of Avidya / Maya (A tacit difference lies between these two words denoting delusion, as well): In Bhamati school, the Avidya that is cause of illusion is basically located in the Jeeva and tends to delude him with the duality / multiplicity until Gnaana dawns in him/her at some time. In Vivarana school, the Avidya is located in Brahman itself, who wills to keep the jiva in delusion and also lead him to realization, over time. Both these solutions have their merits and issues.
