What were those fireballs released by f-4 phantoms over vietnam?
Q. What are those flare-looking things that F-4 Phantoms dropped in the vietnam war, like napalm or something? It was in a scene in forrest gump. What else did f-4s do for ground support? In forrest gump, Lt. Dan called in an airstrike, then the f-4s came in and dropped those things, so the'yre not actually flares. Here's the forrest gump scene, (scroll to 6:45) -

A. In Forrest Gump, the F-4 Phantoms were dropping Napalm canisters into the Jungle. Theoretically, Napalm was used for no other purpose than to "clear vegetation" so that ground troops could get a clear line of sight on the enemy. In reality, the napalm was an effective weapon against enemy infantry dug into defensive positions. Napalm canisters differ from bombs in that they do not have fins. When a canister is dropped, it spins wildly and out of control. The canister has an altimeter on it which breaks apart at a preset altitude. The spinning of the canister throws the gelatinous napalm fuel over a wide area. The resulting fire is a result of a small charge inside the canister. Hope that clears up a few questions for you.

A. Think about it... Does Australia really NEED a long-range bomber? Any aircraft that has air-to-air refueling capability can deliver bombs to almost any place in the world.

What F stop would you use to shoot pictures of an active child outside?
Q. I'm still learning my digital SLR camera and am very confusde about F stop and shutter speed. But what F stop would you use at about sunset when the light can be intense in some areas.

A. My first priority would be whether you want to stop motion, or have a sense of motion and activity with some blur. If you want to stop fast human motion such as a whirling arm, shutter speed will need to be at least 1/500s. However, you can give a sense of motion and speed by using a slower shutter speed and creating some blur. Second, I would be using a long focal length. A good zoom will allow you to isolate the child and fill the frame. Third, avoid photographing with the subject looking into the sun. They will squint, which is unlikely to show them at their best. Fourth, fill the frame with the child. I know my best shots of my children and grandchildren establish their context with minimal background. I just wish I could… [cont.]
