Paganism (from Latin paganus, meaning "country dweller", "rustic") is a blanket term used to refer to various polytheistic, non-Abrahamic religious traditions. Its exact definition may vary. It is primarily used in a historical context, referring to Greco-Roman polytheism as well as the polytheistic traditions of Europe before Christianization. In a wider sense, extended to contemporary religions, it includes most of the Eastern religions, and the indigenous traditions of the Americas, Central Asia, Australia and Africa, as well as non-Abrahamic folk religion in general. More narrow definitions will not include any of the world religions and restrict the term to local or rural currents not organized as civil religions. Characteristic of pagan traditions is the absence of proselytism and the presence of a living mythology, which explains religious practice.

The term pagan is a Christian adaptation of the "gentile" of Judaism, and as such has an inherent Abrahamic bias, and pejorative connotations among monotheists, comparable to heathen and infidel also known as kafir (كافر) and mushrik in Islam. For this reason, ethnologists avoid the term "paganism," with its uncertain and varied meanings, in referring to traditional or historic faiths, preferring more precise categories such as polytheism, shamanism, pantheism, or animism.

Since the later 20th century, Pagan or Paganism has become widely used as a self-designation by adherents of Neopaganism. As such, various modern scholars have begun to apply the term to three groups of separate faiths: Historical Polytheism (such as Celtic polytheism, Norse paganism, and Hellenic Polytheistic Reconstructionism also called Hellenismos), Folk/ethnic/Indigenous religions (such as Chinese folk religion and African traditional religion), and Neopaganism (such as Wicca and Germanic Neopaganism).

According to Pagan religions where do Christians go after they die?
Q. For example: In Hellenismos (Greek Paganism) when you die you go to Hades, well, does everyone go there? Will asatruars (Norse Paganism) go to Hades to, or will they go to their afterlife? According to your Pagan religion will Christians go to Heaven or will they go to one of the Pagan afterlifes? Thanks!

A. I'm heathen. Pre-christian heathens believed that the dead went into the gravemound or something similar (a gravemound/hall in a mountain). But when confronted with christianity, they were given an option. Radbod of Frisia denied christianity on the basis that he would rather spend the afterlife with his family instead of in heaven with a bunch of people he did not know and had no relationship with. Also, the concept of Hel, as in place and giantess, is a later syncretic belief and probably reflects influence from both christianity and Classical myth. Such concepts would at least suggest that the afterlife destination of people weren't considered consistent. The dead left on the battlefield and not returned to their familial… [cont.]

A. If you know what a Venn diagram is, this will be simple. Draw a big circle. Now, within it, draw a small circle. The big circle is Pagan, the little circle is Wicca. OK? There are many other faiths, besides Wicca, which also fit into that big Pagan circle, and there are some Pagans that don't have any specific beliefs or faith, aside from a reverence for the Earth and a disbelief of the Abrahamic religions. Depending on the level of understanding the person I am speaking to has, I often identify myself as Pagan. However, if the person I am talking to knows a little more, I make sure to give the more precise lable. There is a lot of difference in belief and practice between Wiccans, Druids, reconstructionist Norse and… [cont.]
