A religion is a system of human thought which usually includes a set of narratives, symbols, beliefs and practices that give meaning to the practitioner's experiences of life through reference to a higher power, deity or deities, or ultimate truth. Religion is commonly identified by the practitioner's prayer, ritual, meditation, music and art, among other things, but more generally is interwoven with society and politics. It may focus on specific supernatural, metaphysical, and moral claims about reality (the cosmos and human nature) which may yield a set of religious laws, ethics, and a particular lifestyle. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and religious experience.

The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction. "Religion" is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system," but it is more socially defined than personal convictions, and it entails specific behaviors, respectively.

Religion Portal

The development of religion has taken many forms in various cultures. It considers psychological and social roots, along with origins and historical development.

In the frame of western religious thought, religions present a common quality, the "hallmark of patriarchal religious thought": the division of the world in two comprehensive domains, one sacred, the other profane. Religion is often described as a communal system for the coherence of belief focusing on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object, that is considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. Moral codes, practices, values, institutions, tradition, rituals, and scriptures are often traditionally associated with the core belief, and these may have some overlap with concepts in secular philosophy. Religion is also often described as a "way of life" or a life stance.

What is the difference between Religion and Faith?
Q. My understanding is that Faith is a personal trust in God, Religion is something you do to show others what tribe you belong to. I read somewhere that there are 320 Religions around the world, each one claims to be the right one. It's obvious they can't all be the right, so is there such a thing as true and false religions.

A. Faith makes us sure of what we hope for and gives us proof of what we cannot see. (Hebrews 11:1). In other words, through and by your personal relationship with God, you know that you know, that you know...your needs are met, and all things are possible to them that believe; this is because He loves you. Religion...is ritualistic. It is based on the premise that if we conduct ourselves and our lives in a certain manner, we will earn God's love. Most people do not see the difference between faith and religion; but, there is clearly a marked difference. Yes...there is a false religion. Any religion that preaches works above faith, is a false religion. Any religion that does not preach Jesus as being the Way, the Truth and the Life is a… [cont.]

What religion has the most ridiculous mythology?
Q. I know there's a lot to choose from. Lets not count Scientology because I don't think it has gotten large enough to move from the cult stage to to the mainstream religion stage just quite yet.
Asked by Satan - Fri Oct 2 18:09:24 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Before we start labelling mythologies as ridiculous, we should realize that most of the myths are rich in symbolism, and mythology is a language in which subtler truths are encoded. Most people are unable to see past the exterior to grasp the real significance.
